Among the most interesting things we learned recently, whilst working on our new website, is that one of the most common search terms that has led people to Aquatic Adventures is “Snorkel Training”. This, combined with some of our own market research speaking to friends and family members who don’t dive but who are keen to “test the waters”, has led us to turn some of our attention to our surface brethren and work on some new snorkel courses.
Unfortunately, snorkelling is not something which PADI particularly targets with their curriculum, and despite the recent push for Freediving and Mermaid courses, the entry level of snorkelling hasn’t raised their interest as much.
So, we went ahead and developed our own curriculum, designed specifically for snorkellers, not divers. We sent it to PADI, and the response was that they are keen to see how it goes and may endorse it in the future, but that means for now it will operate independently of our primary certification agency, under our own auspices.
We are calling the new curriculum S-E-A, which stands for Snorkelling Education & Awareness, and we have developed the following curriculum to allow people to develop their snorkelling skills in a manner similar to what we as divers work through with our continuing training:
Courses will start in the summer, and we are taking expressions of interest now so that we can get the ball rolling and start to build a snorkel crew within the Aquaholics club who can participate alongside the divers in club events.
